The Louvre’s $140M Royal Heist Is Headed to Hollywood

The jaw-dropping jewellery heist that rocked the Louvre Museum last autumn is officially getting the silver-screen treatment. French trade media reports that a major feature film detailing the audacious robbery is currently in development.

On 19 October 2025, thieves managed to bypass security and escape with more than $140 million worth of priceless historical jewellery. The fallout from the crime was immediate and severe, triggering a massive security crisis within the legendary institution and ultimately leading to the resignation of the Louvre’s director, Laurence des Cars.

A Star Director Takes the Helm

According to Le Film Français, acclaimed French filmmaker Romain Gavras is tapped to direct the upcoming project.

Gavras is no stranger to high-stakes storytelling. His impressive resume includes:

  • The 2025 feature film Sacrifice, starring Anya Taylor-Joy.
  • High-profile music videos for GENER8ION.
  • The iconic visuals for Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild”.

From True Crime Pages to the Big Screen

The film will be an adaptation of the investigative book ‘Main basse sur le Louvre’ (“Hands Off the Louvre”), penned by a powerhouse team of journalists from Le Parisien, Le Monde, and Paris Match.

Publisher Flammarion has officially confirmed that the film rights have been sold to the production company Iconoclast. While the movie’s title and official cast list are still under wraps, the source material promises a gripping, realistic look at the crime.

The Current Status: Despite a seven-month investigation that has led to the arrest of several suspects, the stolen treasure remains completely missing.

How the Crime Unfolded

The brazen theft took place a mere 250 metres away from the Mona Lisa, the museum’s most heavily guarded masterpiece. The thieves targeted nine historical jewels, successfully walking away with eight of them.

The missing collection contains priceless royal artifacts once owned by:

  • Emperor Napoleon
  • Napoleon III
  • Empress Marie-Louise
  • Empress Eugénie

The book’s authors have described the disappearance of these royal adornments as a baffling mystery that continues to stump top investigators, shining a harsh spotlight on the sophisticated rise of organized art theft.
